European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde told finance ministers gathered in Thailand that sound public finances remain essential to broader economic stability, describing fiscal sustainability as a “crucial anchor” at a moment when rising debt and energy-driven inflation are testing economies worldwide.

Addressing the International Monetary and Financial Committee, Lagarde urged governments to adhere to existing fiscal rules, reduce excessive debt levels, and improve the efficiency of public spending in order to rebuild the financial buffers many countries depleted during recent years of elevated spending.

Lagarde cautioned that measures introduced to cushion the current energy shock should remain temporary and narrowly targeted, warning that allowing such support to become permanent risks layering additional long-term fiscal pressure on top of governments already managing elevated debt burdens.

Lagarde reiterated that the eurozone's economic outlook continues to face downside risks, even as inflation risks remain tilted to the upside, a combination that leaves policymakers with limited room to maneuver on both the fiscal and monetary sides simultaneously.

Her remarks add to a broader signal from the ECB that, while open to supporting member states through the current period of energy and geopolitical disruption, it expects governments to pair any near-term relief measures with a credible path back toward fiscal discipline rather than treating emergency spending as a permanent fixture of national budgets.
